Success Story - Jerry

Challenge

“I have a history of mental illness due to depression and other chemical imbalances in my brain.  In 1990, I was hospitalized several times for these problems."

Before:  Jerry was employed. However, after a series of hospitalizations for depression, Jerry became unemployed and unable to support his family.
Now: Jerry is now gainfully employed at Bayaud Industries and works on KUSA Channel 9 video duplication.

What it took to make the difference...

"My doctors recommended a steady work schedule, in addition to medication and other therapy, to treat my illness. Soon after, I entered the Bayaud Industries vocational rehabilitation program, and was trained to make duplicate copies of news broadcasts on DVD to fulfill orders paced by customers who want a copy of a specific newscast segment."

Now I'm successful.

"I have stable work. I have now been at Bayaud Industries for almost 18 years.  I enjoy coming to work because every day is different.  Generally, I make a duplicate copy of a news broadcasts on DVD to fill orders for customers who want a copy of a specific newscast segment. Bayaud Industries has helped me live with my disabilities by providing opportunities for me to use my mind and interact with others."

"I've made friends. The supervisors and fellow workers are very accepting of me, in part because some of them have similar disabilities. The staff has gotten to know me, as have many of the customers.  They indicate an interest in my life and I have an interest in theirs.  The atmosphere of acceptance has helped me build up my confidence and hope. Before, I didn’t do much outside of my family, but now I do enjoy attending the company’s picnics, holiday parties, and other activities during the year. I almost consider Bayaud Industries a part of my family."

"It's better with my family. Bayaud Industries has also given me a way to connect with my family again.  All of my children work, and working gives me a way to relate to them.  The fact that I get up every morning, pack a lunch, get prepared for work, and get on the bus like everyone else—it makes me feel just like a regular person. I can relate to my children despite my disability."

Jerry developed the skills to manage his illness, maintain successful employment, and relate more meaningfully to both family and friends.
